Greater Manchester’s most used tram stop has been revealed, with close to 4.5m passengers using the city centre platform.

St Peter’s Square retains its crown as top stop from 2021/22, the last time a ranking was released by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

Deansgate-Castlefield and Piccadilly Gardens also kept their spots as second and third-placed stations, although they have swapped over since 2022. Deansgate is now used by 2.1m people compared to the Gardens’ 1.7m.

The three least-used tram stops are all in Wythenshawe, according to footfall data from Freedom of Information request by the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Only 23,850 people visited least-used Robinswood Road last year, the station after Wythenshawe Town Centre when heading to Manchester Airport.

Crossacres, with 42,950 passengers, and Peel Hall, with 45,250, round out the bottom three.

TfGM recorded 12m more journeys, based on ticketing data, from 2022 to 2024.

Some 45.6m journeys were made across Metrolink last year, compared to 40.2m in 2023 and 33.5m.

Rising passenger figures come at the same time as a drive to stamp out fare dodging, beginning in 2023 when the penalty fare rose from £45 to £120.

In July, Fran Wilkinson of TfGM said since October 2023 there had been “concerted efforts to tackle fare evasion and protect revenue on Metrolink”.

She said tens of thousands of tickets are checked every single day and “more staff than ever” have been deployed to carry out the checks.
