The musician characterised the experience as “devastating”, acknowledging the emotional toll of his vision loss.

In an earlier interview with The Times, he expressed distress at being unable to watch his sons Zachary, 14, and Elijah, 12, play rugby and football.

Despite these difficulties, Mr John maintains a philosophical outlook. “You just have to grin and bear it,” he added, whilst acknowledging the emotional challenges of adapting to life with severely impaired vision.

The musician remains optimistic about future medical breakthroughs that could restore his vision.

“I’ve just gotta be patient that someday science will help me with this one,” he continued, drawing parallels with advances in AIDS treatment.

His husband David Furnish offered encouraging news about ongoing treatments. “We’ve been doing some treatments and there’s been some improvements in his left eye, which is really good,” Mr Furnish explained to the publication.

The couple are exploring cutting-edge medical options, with Mr Furnish noting how rapidly the field is evolving.

He highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence in medicine, describing AI’s contributions to medical science as “astonishing”.

“It’s really beautiful,” he shared, also mentioning supportive messages from Pete Townshend, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
