New data shows driving test waiting times are at their lowest since November 2024, as the Government continues to reduce the burden on learner drivers.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has confirmed that it has slashed average waiting times for practical driving tests.

In its latest release of driving test data, a learner in Great Britain is waiting an average of 19.7 weeks for a driving test.

This is the lowest it has been since November 2024 and represents a drop in average waiting times as the DVSA looks to handle the situation, which has impacted millions of drivers.

In total, 191,682 tests were completed, with the pass rate remaining above 50 per cent for the 10th consecutive month.

Over the last 12 months to September 2026, more than 2.16 million practical driving tests were conducted by the DVSA.

This is the highest rolling 12-month figure on record, while the average waiting time between booking and taking the test was an average of 11.6 weeks.

Two in five tests were taken within seven weeks of booking a test. Almost 30 per cent of tests were taken in more than 21 weeks of booking.

Roads Minister Justin Madders said: “We inherited record waiting times and a significant backlog, and while driving test waiting times are still not where we want them to be, these figures show real progress is being made.

“It’s clear the action we’re taking is delivering results, helping more learners get their licence and enjoy the opportunities that come with being able to drive.”

A DVSA spokesperson stated that the organisation was committed to reducing waiting times, with “real progress” being made.

They reiterated the lowest waiting times since November 2024, adding that examiner numbers are at their highest level since November 2017.

The spokesperson continued, saying: “We also conducted more tests last month than any September on record.

“But we know there’s more to do and we won’t stop until every learner can get a test slot when they need one, wherever they’re learning to drive.”

Andy Bell, managing director of First Vehicle Leasing, said: “Waiting for a test date is frustrating, but use that time to do your homework on your first car.

“Get insurance quotes on a few small cars before you fall for one, and work out what each option really costs you over two or three years, not just what leaves your account each month.”
