One of the most iconic cars in the world, the DeLorean, is making a comeback. But rather than seeing it on the road, it will be soaring through the sky.

DeLorean Motor Company has confirmed that it will enter the Airspeeder International Series, as the constructor of the United States Airspeeder team.

The Airspeeder International Series is the world’s first racing series for electric flying cars, with the 2026-2027 season opening in November 2026.

DeLorean Motor Company announced its entry into the Airspeeder International Series today at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026.

The Airspeeder International Series will see national teams use electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft to compete.

This will take place across three dimensions through electronically designed courses, rather than conventional circuits.

In its debut season, the DeLorean Airspeeder Team will race the Airspeeder Mk3C, with DeLorean leading the design identity.

The DeLorean Airspeeder for the 2027-2028 season will be designed in collaboration with American universities, including the University of California, UC Berkeley and Georgia Tech.

Cameron Wynne, chief brand officer at DeLorean Motor Company, said: “DeLorean has always stood for the courage to imagine transportation differently.

“People have pictured a DeLorean in the sky for 40 years. We decided it was time to stop picturing it.”

Airspeeder has been created on the premise that electric flying cars should be developed in the same way as conventional automobiles – through racing.

Elite pilots will navigate the courses, which Airspeeder noted can take place in any region and over any terrain.

Mr Wynne said DeLorean wants to advance flying vehicle technology, as well as the regulatory, safety and compliance frameworks required for adoption.

“By engaging early, DeLorean is positioning to help turn future mobility from a vision into practical, scalable reality,” he added.

DeLorean said it will give a new generation of people the opportunity to fall in love with the brand, as millions did through Back to the Future.

The automotive icon and Airspeeder confirmed that further information about the partnership will be released in the near future.

Matt Pearson, founder and CEO of Airspeeder, said: “DeLorean is the original flying car brand.

“Long before anyone had built one, the whole world already knew what a flying DeLorean looked like. Every great racing series is defined by the constructors who choose to compete in it.

“To have an American icon line up on our grid in our first international season tells you where this sport is going.

“America has repeatedly changed how the world moves, on the road, in the air and beyond, and the DeLorean Airspeeder Team carries that ambition into a new arena.”
