A 15-year-old boy has been charged with the murder of a teenager who died after being stabbed in a Wiltshire market town at the weekend.

Shayne Hambakachere, 16, was found seriously injured on London Road, Chippenham, just before 4pm on Saturday, Wiltshire Police said.

He was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, where he died from his injuries.

The force said a white British boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with his murder.

The boy was first arrested shortly after the incident on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent.

However, he was subsequently re-arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday and charged with murder.

The force said he remains in custody and will appear at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Wiltshire Police offered its “sincere condolences” to Shayne’s family and friends, and thanked the local community for its support, adding it recognises the “concern” the incident will have caused for people in Chippenham.

Earlier on Tuesday, Shayne’s father Emmanuel paid tribute to his son and thanked staff at Southmead Hospital for providing “wonderful care and support every step of the way.”

In a statement issued by Wiltshire Police, Mr Hambakachere said: “Shayne will be greatly missed, he had a great sense of humour and we will miss the way he laughed so loudly without any care in the world.”

He said the hospital staff “tried their best” to save Shayne’s life, for which he and his family will “forever be grateful.”

Mr Hambakachere said: “We would like to thank all the doctors and staff at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, who tried their best to save Shayne’s life while providing wonderful care and support to us every step of the way.”

He added: “One of the doctors offered to drive all the way from Bristol to Chippenham at 1am to fetch Shayne’s sister so she could say goodbye to her brother.

“We want you to know that we were touched by your kindness and we will forever be grateful.”

He described Shayne, who was a pupil at Hardenhuish School in Chippenham, as an “ambitious and driven” young man who loved going to the gym, worked hard to make his own money and regularly helped with household chores.

Detective are urging anyone with information to contact the investigation team or report information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
