Experienced Oldham Athletic striker Joe Garner has signed a contract extension to stay at the League Two club until the end of the season.

The 37-year-old initially signed a six-month deal in the summer which was set to expire in January but he will now remain at Boundary Park until June 2026.

Garner scored in all three National League play-off games at the end of last season to help the Latics win promotion to the Football League.

His start to the 2025-26 season was disrupted by injury but Garner has netted twice in 10 league appearances since returning to the side, including at high-flying Walsall in a 2-1 win on Monday.

“I’m really pleased to get this sorted,” Garner told the club website., external

“From the moment I came in, this club felt right for me and I’ve loved every minute of my time here so far.

“Coming back from injury wasn’t easy, but the support from the staff, the lads and the supporters has been unbelievable.

“To be able to contribute with important goals and help the team in any way I can is what drives me on. We’ve got a strong group here and a manager who believes in us.

“I want to keep leading by example, helping the younger lads and doing everything I can to push this club forward.”

Garner has scored 173 career goals for a number of clubs including Nottingham Forest, Preston North End, Rangers, Ipswich Town, Wigan Athletic and most recently Carlisle United before he moved to Oldham in January 2024.

Oldham boss Micky Mellon described Garner as “a leader in every sense of the word”.

“His experience, professionalism and mentality are invaluable to us,” Mellon said.

“What people maybe don’t always see is the work he does for the team and for his fellow forwards. He makes others better, and that’s a huge quality to have.

“He’s a top professional, a great character around the dressing room and his influence on the pitch speaks for itself. We’re delighted he’s extending his stay with us.”
