Almost half of councils have reported a drop in the condition of roads in the area in recent years, according to new data from the Government.

Around 45 per cent of councils reported an increase in the number of “red” roads between 2024 and 2026, figures from the Department for Transport show.

A “red” road is considered to be poor and should be considered for maintenance, while other roads can be ranked as “amber” or “green”.

In total, 147 local authorities reported data on the condition of A roads in the years ending March 2024 and March 2026.

Some of these roads (45 per cent) saw a rise in the proportion of A roads deemed to be “red”, while 53 (36 per cent) saw no change and 28 (19 per cent) fell.

Brighton and Hove recorded the highest figure in the year to March 2026, with 17 per cent of A roads classed as “red”.

This was followed by Nottingham (15 per cent), Brent in London (14 per cent), Salford (13 per cent) and North Tyneside (13 per cent).

RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: “This data confirms what so many road users will have observed on a daily basis for years – that far too many roads are in a poor condition, leading to uncomfortable journeys and costly repair bills.”
