Two councillors are in the running to became the next leader of Manchester City Council.

Garry Bridges, who is the council’s deputy leader, and Tom Robinson, who is the executive member for healthy Manchester and adult social care, have put themselves forward for the role.

The position of council leader was previously held by Bev Craig, who was elected as the new mayor of Greater Manchester on Friday.

The Labour Group will decide which candidate goes forward on 1 September before a special meeting of the city council on 3 September.

A spokesperson for Labour said they were pleased that “two of our most talented and experienced members have put themselves forward for leader”.

A council by-election in Burnage – to fill the seat left vacant by Craig – will be held on 10 September.
