A body of a man has been found while two remain missing after a fishing boat disappeared off the UK coast.

Emergency services swarmed the scene after receiving reports of a missing fishing vessel and three men onboard off the coast of Port of Ness, Isle of Lewis, last night.

The incident in the Outer Hebrides was first reported to police around 11.35pm.

Since, the body of one of the men has been recovered but formal identification is yet to take place.

The men’s next of kin have been notified and are being supported by officers.

An HM Coastguard plane, two helicopters, six coastguard teams, two RNLI lifeboats and a local vessel have been deployed as part of the urgent search.

A Coastguard spokesman said: “HM Coastguard received a report at around 9.20pm yesterday (October 13) of a fishing vessel with three people on board that was overdue from Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides.

“A coastguard aeroplane, two coastguard helicopters, six coastguard rescue teams, two RNLI lifeboats, a local vessel and Police Scotland are all involved in the search.”

A police spokesman said: “Emergency services are in attendance following a report of a missing fishing vessel and three men onboard off the coast of Port of Ness, Isle of Lewis, which was reported to police around 11.35pm on Tuesday, October 13.

“The body of one of the men has been recovered, however formal identification is yet to take place.

“The next of kin of the men are aware and are being supported by officers.

“Extensive searches, assisted by HM Coastguard and RNLI, are ongoing.”

The Met Office has strong winds and adverse weather conditions are due to cover much of western Scotland – as well as the Outer Hebrides – for the remainder of the day.

The region covering the Port of Ness has been issued a yellow wind warning and will last until 7pm tonight.

Some coastal areas could see winds as high as 70mph late morning and early afternoon.

The Met Office further warned such conditions could cause “likely” delays to road, air and ferry transport, as well as bus and train services.

The scenic coastal village is home to just 300 residents.

The wider area of Ness is well-known for its fishing heritage, with a Fishery Memorial being erected in the village centre to celebrate its culture.

The memorial was also installed to commemorate 96 people who died in the industry between 1835 and 1900.

Each year, sailors in the Ness district set off from the port to Sula Sgeir in the Atlantic Ocean in order to collect young gannet for food.
