Banks are offering cash bonuses of up to £300 to customers who switch their current account.

With Christmas approaching, the money could give household budgets a boost, although some rewards take months to arrive.

More than one million current account switches have been completed in 2026, according to new figures from the Current Account Switch Service.

Between July and September, 411,384 switches were completed, the busiest quarter since the final three months of 2023. That was up 42 per cent on the previous quarter and 55 per cent compared with the same period last year.

September alone accounted for 152,299 switches, the highest monthly total since November 2022.

However, switching does not automatically qualify customers for a cash reward. Each bank sets its own rules, including minimum deposits, Direct Debits and restrictions on previous customers.

Barclays Bank Account: Up to £300

Barclays offers £150 for qualifying switchers, followed by up to five monthly payments of £30.

  • To qualify: Customers must meet Barclays’ qualifying salary-payment requirement of at least £2,000 within 30 days
  • To receive the remaining £150: Continue paying in at least £2,000 in qualifying income and make at least 10 eligible debit card payments in each qualifying month.
  • Payment timing: The initial £150 is paid within 28 working days of meeting the conditions. The remaining rewards are paid in stages.
  • Main exclusions: Joint accounts, previous Barclays switching-bonus recipients and customers with an open Barclays current account on or before October 1, 2026.

Transfers from another personal current account do not count towards the qualifying income requirement. Customers should check Barclays’ full deposit rules before applying.

Santander Everyday: £240

Santander pays a £240 bonus to eligible customers switching to its fee-free Everyday account.

  • To qualify: Complete a full switch within 60 days of requesting it, pay in at least £1,500 and have two qualifying household Direct Debits.
  • Additional requirement: Pay at least £200 into a Santander Regular Saver within the same period.
  • Payment timing: Around 90 days after requesting the switch.
  • Main exclusions: Customers who held a Santander current account on January 1, 2026, or have previously received a Santander switching incentive.

Both accounts must remain open, with the two household Direct Debits active, when the bonus is paid. Joint accounts qualify for one £240 payment, not £240 per person.

HSBC Bank Account: £220

HSBC offers £220 to eligible new customers who open its Bank Account through the mobile app.

  • To qualify: Within 60 days, complete a full switch with at least two Direct Debits, deposit £2,000 and spend £500 using the debit card.
  • Payment timing: Within 60 days of meeting all the requirements.
  • Main exclusions: Existing HSBC or First Direct customers, and anyone who has held a current account with either since January 1, 2023. The Basic Bank Account does not qualify.
  • Joint accounts: Not included in this offer.

Customers should allow for both the qualifying period and the subsequent payment window rather than assume the bonus will arrive before Christmas.

First Direct 1st Account: Up to £210

First Direct’s boosted offer combines its usual £175 switching reward with an additional £35.

  • To qualify: Within 45 days of opening, complete a switch with at least two Direct Debits or standing orders, deposit £1,000, make five debit card payments and log in to digital banking.
  • Payment timing: By the 20th of the following month after meeting the conditions.
  • Deadline: The boosted offer applies to accounts opened between September 14 and December 2, 2026.
  • Other benefits: Access to a seven per cent fixed regular saver accepting up to £300 a month, fee-free overseas debit card spending and a £250 interest-free overdraft, subject to approval.

Previous First Direct customers and some HSBC customers are excluded, so check the eligibility rules before applying.

Club Lloyds: £200

Club Lloyds offers £200 alongside a choice of annual rewards, including Disney+ with adverts or six cinema tickets.

  • To qualify: Open an eligible account and start a full switch with at least three active Direct Debits by December 9, 2026.
  • Payment timing: Within 14 working days of starting the switch, provided the conditions are met.
  • Account fee: £5 a month, waived when customers pay in at least £2,000 that month.
  • Main exclusions: Switches from Halifax or Bank of Scotland, and customers who have received a switching incentive from Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland since January 1, 2023.

The account also provides access to a regular saver paying 6.25 per cent fixed interest on deposits of up to £250 a month for a year.

NatWest Reward: £200

NatWest offers £200 to eligible customers switching to its Reward account. Its fee-free Select account also qualifies for the switching offer.

  • To qualify: Complete a full switch, pay in at least £1,250 and log in to the mobile app within 60 days.
  • Payment timing: Within 30 days of meeting the requirements.
  • Reward account fee: £2 a month.
  • Ongoing rewards: The account pays £4 monthly cashback when customers meet the £1,250 pay-in requirement and pay two qualifying Direct Debits of at least £2 each. After the fee, that is £24 a year.
  • Main exclusions: Customers who held a NatWest current account on May 6, 2026, previous NatWest Group switching-incentive recipients and switches from RBS or Ulster Bank.

Nationwide FlexDirect: £175

Nationwide offers £175 for eligible switches to FlexDirect, FlexAccount or FlexPlus.

  • To qualify: Switch at least two Direct Debits within 28 days. Within 31 days of opening, pay in £1,000 and make at least one debit card payment.
  • Payment timing: Within 10 days of meeting the conditions.
  • Main exclusions: Switches from Virgin Money and most customers who have received a Nationwide switching bonus since 2021. Exceptions apply when switching between sole and joint accounts.
  • FlexDirect benefits: Five per cent interest on balances up to £1,500 for a year and up to £120 annual cashback, subject to separate conditions.

The interest and cashback require monthly deposits of at least £1,500. Customers can also access a linked regular saver paying 6.5 per cent variable interest on deposits of up to £200 a month.

The biggest bonus will not necessarily make an account the best fit. Compare monthly fees, deposit requirements, banking services and any benefits you would lose by leaving your existing provider.

A full switch through the Current Account Switch Service closes the old account and transfers the banking arrangements covered by the service. Offers can be withdrawn, so check the bank’s latest terms before applying.

Across the quarter, 99 per cent of switches were finished within the seven-working-day guarantee. Since its launch, the service has now handled 13.3 million switches and redirected more than 201.1 million payments.

John Dentry, Product Manager at Pay.UK, which owns and operates the service, said: “The huge range of providers underscores the competitiveness of the market and the wealth of choice put in the hands of the British public.”
