Rock bassist Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield has passed away at 63 after suffering a collapse at his residence in Heaton Moor, Stockport.

According to family members, emergency services were summoned to the property but paramedics were unable to resuscitate the Manchester-born musician.

The bassist, who achieved prominence with The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, died on Thursday afternoon, prompting tributes from far and wide.

The musician’s brother Greg shared the devastating announcement via Facebook with a tribute of his own.

Alongside a snap of the musician, hsi brother wrote: “IT IS WITH THE HEAVIEST OF HEARTS THAT I HAVE TO ANNOUNCE THE SAD PASSING OF MY BROTHER GARY MANI MOUNFIELD. RIP RKID.”

Mr Mounfield’s brother commented beneath his announcement: “Reunited with his beautiful wife Imelda.”

Mounfield’s nephew expressed his sorrow on social media, stating: “Unfortunately, with sad news my uncle Gary Mani Mounfield from the stone roses has sadly passed away today.

“Thinking of his twins and my uncle Greg at this sad time. He will be reunited in heaven with his lovely wife Imelda RIP Manni.”

Musicians across the industry have shared their grief. Rowetta from Happy Mondays posted on X: “Going to miss you so much. All my love to the boys, the family & all those who knew & loved him.”

The Manchester arts community described the loss as devastating, with tributes highlighting Mounfield’s profound influence on the city’s musical heritage.

The announcement of his death arrived merely six days after Mounfield revealed plans for an extensive speaking tour across Britain.

The intimate events were scheduled to run from September 2026 through June 2027, during which he intended to share memories from his illustrious career.

Mr Mounfield’s musical journey began when he joined The Stone Roses in 1987, contributing to both their albums before the group dissolved in 1996.

He subsequently became part of Primal Scream, performing with them until 2011 when The Stone Roses reformed.

The planned tour would have covered landmark moments including the 1990 Spike Island performance and the band’s reunion stadium concerts.

This tragedy follows the loss of his wife Imelda to bowel cancer in 2023, after a three-year struggle with the disease.

During her illness, Ms Mounfield organised charitable auctions featuring items from David Beckham and Oasis to raise funds.

She told the BBC: “I just don’t want to be sat thinking about cancer and illness all the time, because it is all-consuming.

“And this was just a way to balance that out – to give myself something else to think about but something positive.”
