A member of staff at a Sheffield secondary school was taken to hospital after a fight broke out between pupils.

Police were called to reports of a “disturbance” at Fir Vale Academy on Owler Lane shortly after midday today.

South Yorkshire Police said one staff member was taken to hospital but has since been discharged.

The force said in a statement an “altercation” had lead to “broader pockets of disorder” among pupils in the school grounds.

“Several staff members and students received minor injuries which did not require medical treatment,” police said.

“One staff member was taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening or life changing and were not the result of an assault. They have since been discharged.

“There is no evidence of weapons being used during the disturbance.

“No arrests have been made in connection to the incident and an investigation is underway.

“Pupils were able to leave the premises safely at the end of the school day.”

Police said they will be carrying out high visibility patrols in the area following the incident.

Sheffield Superintendent Paul Ferguson said: “We understand this incident will have caused significant concern in the local community, especially for families who had children in school at the time.

“Our officers will remain in the area conducting intensive, high visibility patrols and enquiries throughout this evening and into the early hours of tomorrow morning and we will continue to work closely with the school and key partners to ensure the school is a safe and welcoming environment.

“If you have any concerns or questions please do stop and talk to them, they are there to listen and help where they can.”

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesman earlier said they are “not aware” of any incidents at the school, Yorkshire Live reports.

Fir Vale Academy was previously called the Fir Vale School before joining the United Learning Trust last year.

Upon an inspection in February 2025, Ofsted found the school to “require improvements” across three subject areas, including behaviour and attitudes, quality of education and leadership and management.

GB News has contacted the United Learning Trust for comment.
