Overnight blizzards hit in Auchleven in Aberdeenshire

More than 70 schools have been closed in Aberdeenshire, with heavy snow causing causing further disruption in the north east of Scotland.

Aberdeenshire Council has listed dozens of schools that are unable to open following another night of wintry weather conditions.

The A90 in Aberdeen has been closed between Cleanhill Roundabout and the Stonehaven Roundabout, with Police Scotland urging drivers to avoid the area.

A yellow warning for snow and ice in the north east remains in place until 21:00.

The Met Office said there was a potential for lows of -12C in areas of lying snow continuing into Friday.

Scottish transport operators outlined their winter resilience plans last week.

This included stocking up on 497,000 tonnes of salt – more than was used for the entirety of last winter – and preparing 240 gritters to undertake salt spreading and snow ploughing patrols of the trunk road network.
