A conviction against Sir Sadiq Khan has been quashed after the London Mayor was accused of failing to pay car tax on a vehicle, which he described as a “scam”.

Following a request from the DVLA, a hearing at Hereford Magistrates’ Court on Thursday scrapped the conviction against Sir Sadiq Khan.

In August, a criminal prosecution was brought by the DVLA after the Mayor was accused of failing to pay car tax on a 24-year-old Nissan Micra.

Following a controversial Single Justice Procedure case, the Mayor was ordered to pay a fine of £220, as well as £85 in costs and to settle a £35.84 bill in unpaid tax.

City Hall officials hit back at the conviction, arguing that the car does not belong to the Mayor, nor Transport for London.

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London told GB News: “This is a scam, which is a crime.

“It’s not the first time the Mayor has been victim of a scam involving people falsely stating that Sadiq is the owner of a vehicle. Such behaviour is illegal, and the DVLA are aware.”

The case was formally reopened against the Mayor and withdrawn by a panel of magistrates after a request by the DVLA this morning.

Sir Sadiq Khan was not present, nor was a representative for the DVLA, at a “one-minute hearing” at the Hereford Justice Centre.

According to PA, Mrs Digings JP, Chairwoman of the bench, said: “We accept the reopening of the case as requested.

“Further to the request from the DVLA, we are going to mark the matter as withdrawn.”

GB News has contacted the Mayor of London’s office for a further comment.

According to the original court documents, a request for information about the vehicle was first sent to a Gordon Ramsey restaurant, rather than the TfL headquarters.

It outlined that Sir Khan’s name and date of birth appeared on the car in official Government documents.

When it failed to receive a response to letters asking for the identity of the vehicle owner to be confirmed, the DVLA proceeded with a criminal prosecution.

A record of the conviction was again sent to Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen, Bar & Rooftop in Stratford.

The notice sent to the Mayor stated that there was a 28-day deadline to pay the £340.84 court bill.

In the event of non-payment, the Mayor could have faced a heftier fine, the threat of bailiffs, or even “a warrant for your arrest to bring you to court”.
