The purpose of their meeting became clear on Sunday, when both women shared photographs from the occasion on Instagram. Timed to coincide with International Day of the Girl on October 11, the Duchess announced that every penny of net proceeds from her As Ever brand’s jams and teas would be donated to the Malala Fund through a partnership with Archewell Philanthropies.

The fund, established in 2013, campaigns for girls’ access to 12 years of free, safe and quality education, concentrating its efforts in regions where young women face the greatest barriers to schooling.

Meghan wrote in her post: “This International Day of the Girl, in partnership with Archewell Philanthropies, 100% of net proceeds from As Ever jams and teas will support Malala Fund and its vital work to ensure that every girl has access to free, safe, quality education.”

The pair also issued a joint statement declaring: “When we support the girls of today, we empower the women of tomorrow. Access to education is the key to unlocking this.”
