In a recent interview with Gardeners’ World Magazine, Mr Don opened up about what prompted his departure. He described how the role consumed his life well beyond filming days, despite the short journey from home to set.
“Then, one day this summer, I woke up and knew it was time to stop. Simple as that. They say of sportspeople wondering when to retire, ‘You just know.’ Well, I just knew,” he told the magazine.
Throughout his years on the programme, Mr Don’s canine companions became stars in their own right.
Golden retriever Nigel, who passed away in 2020, was a particular favourite with audiences. Brittany spaniel Peggy died in January 2026, while Yorkshire terrier Patti passed away last month. Ned, another golden retriever, is his current companion.
