Princess Astrid of Norway has died aged 94 just days after after the funeral of her younger brother King Harald V.
She attended the late monarch’s funeral at Oslo Cathedral on September 9 2026.
The Norwegian Palace released a statement today confirming the princess’s death.
It said: “His Majesty the King has received with great sorrow the news that Princess Astrid has passed away. The Princess passed away today, Friday, 11 September, at the age of 94.”

The Prince of Wales represented King Charles, as longstanding royal convention prevents the reigning sovereign from attending the funerals of fellow heads of state.
As heir to the throne, the responsibility to step in for his father at Wednesday’s service falls to William.
Princess Anne, meanwhile, attended in a private capacity, given her role as godmother to Norway’s new monarch, Haakon VIII.

Royals from across Europe and beyond gathered in Oslo for the funeral of King Harald V of Norway.
The Norwegian Palace released the full list of dignitaries in attendance, revealing a sweeping assembly of monarchs, crown princes and princesses, and other senior royals from more than a dozen nations.
Representatives from Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Jordan, Monaco, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Japan, and Greece were among those present to honour the late Norwegian king.
The funeral procession saw Norway’s royal family walking closest to King Harald V’s coffin. King Haakon, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, Prince Sverre Magnus, and Princess Martha Louise all took part in the cortège, with European dignitaries positioned further back.
Queen Sonja, Harald’s widow, was pictured in a car alongside Queen Mette-Marit rather than on foot, her face partially concealed behind a veil.
The procession through Oslo’s streets offered a solemn display of both national mourning and international solidarity.
The British and Norwegian royal families share deep ancestral ties, both the late Queen Elizabeth II and Harald were second cousins, descended from the same great-grandparents, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.
