Paul Whitehouse, the 68-year-old comedian known for The Fast Show and BBC’s Gone Fishing, was targeted by a mugger at a cashpoint in north London while out to collect medication for his wife.
The incident took place on Essex Road in Islington after his wife, Dr Mine Conkbayir, suffered an adverse reaction to medical treatment that left her unwell and needing medicine.
Dr Conkbayir, who married Mr Whitehouse in 2019, shared the ordeal on Instagram after receiving permission from her other half to raise awareness for others.
Alongside a snap of her husband, Dr Conkbayir penned: “Well, a horrid start to the weekend would be an understatement.
“Yesterday, I had a bad reaction to some treatment, which has left me feeling rather rotten. So, last night, Paul dashed out to get me some meds.”
Turning her attention to the incident, she went on: “He was mugged on Essex Road (Islington) – at the cashpoint beside the Sainsbury’s Local.
“He did fight back and retrieved his card, with the perp scuttling away empty-handed. But that’s not the point, is it?”
Dr Conkbayir added that she had initially kept quiet about the incident “out of respect” but that a frustrated Mr Whitehouse agreed she should share what happened in the hope it would “help folk to be more aware when out and about.”
Responding to fans in the comments beneath her post, Dr Conkbayir revealed that Mr Whitehouse was “just p***ed off” about the whole affair and that not a single bystander came to his aid during the attack.
“Nobody helped,” she wrote, adding: “Still, he’s okay. We just wanted to make folk aware.”
Dr Conkbayir indicated that her husband is “considering” reporting the mugging to the police, though it appears no formal complaint had been filed at the time of her post.
She urged the public to remain cautious, writing: “So, please, everyone – I don’t mean to patronise, but please be super vigilant out there.”
Supporters of the couple quickly rallied in the comments section beneath the Instagram post, with several famous faces reaching out to the HBO Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone star.
Fellow comedy actor Reece Shearsmith typed: “So sorry to hear this. Hope he’s not too shaken up. That’s just horrible. X.”
Meanwhile, comedian and Mock the Week regular Angela Barnes weighed in: “What a horrible thing to happen, sending love to you both xxx.”
Ghosts actor Jim Howick was also among the well-wishers, adding: “Oh no!! What a horrible thing! Big love x.”
“FFS. I despair of humanity sometimes. And also, don’t f*** with Paul Whitehouse,” TV presenter Sarah Cawood said.
Meanwhile, DJ Ryan Swain also chimed in: “Hope Pauls ok? Send him my regards and thoughts with you both, hope you’re feeling better.” (sic)
