Nicki Minaj fans are convinced they have worked out why the rapper has made a dramatic shift towards US conservatism in recent years, with some branding her a “fraud”.

The Super Bass singer has sparked backlash after proudly displaying a so-called “Trump Gold Card” on social media, shortly after attending a summit with Donald Trump in Washington DC, where she declared herself his “number one fan”.

The card refers to a proposed high-cost investment visa initiative aimed at attracting wealthy individuals who can invest significant sums, typically cited at between $1 million (£724,860) and $5 million (£3,624 million) into the US economy.

The initiative has been presented as a potential successor to the existing EB-5 investor visa programme, with the administration claiming it would create jobs and stimulate economic growth.

Ms Minaj shared a photo of the card, which featured Mr Trump’s face, on X with the caption: “Welp.”

In a follow-up post, she wrote: “Finalizing that citizenship paperwork as we speak as per MY wonderful, gracious, charming President.”

She added: “Gold Trump card free of charge.” (sic)

The post came after Ms Minaj appeared as a special guest at the Trump Accounts Summit in Washington on Wednesday, an event focused on a new personal retirement savings initiative for children.

Joining President Trump on stage at the Andrew W Mellon Auditorium, she told the audience: “I am probably the president’s number one fan, and that’s not going to change.”

She said public criticism and so-called “smear campaigns” only strengthened her support for the president, adding: “The hate or what people have to say, it does not affect me at all. It actually motivates me to support him more.”

The rapper also suggested President Trump has a “force behind him” and is being protected by God.

Images of the pair holding hands on stage quickly circulated online, while President Trump joked during the event that he planned to grow his nails to match Ms Minaj’s long extensions.

Ms Minaj also pledged to personally contribute between $150,000 (£108,000) and $300,000 (£217,000) to the Trump Accounts programme.

Online reaction to the gold card post was swift and largely critical, with many fans questioning her political alignment.

One user suggested her endorsement of President Trump was purely transactional, writing: “Aahaa!! So THAT’s what it has been about. I have to admit, if that’s the case, I ain’t mad at Nicki. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.”

“That was her payment lol,” another commented, while a third added: “Lmaoo this is what bro gave you for saying all that.” (sic)

Others, however, came to her defence. “Nicki got the Gold Card and the haters are crashing out,” one supporter wrote, while another added: “Congrats on becoming a U.S. citizen.”

“You’re EXACTLY the kind of new American citizen we need, Nicki!” another posted. (sic)

Ms Minaj has been a lawful permanent resident of the United States for decades.

After entering the country without legal status at the age of five, her residency was later regularised. She remains a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago, where she was born.

Ms Minaj’s sharp turn towards conservative politics also drew widespread attention in December 2025 when she made a surprise appearance at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in Arizona.

During a Q&A session, she referred to President Trump as “our handsome, dashing president”, praised him for giving people “hope”, and described him and Vice President JD Vance as “role models” for young men.

Ms Minaj has since publicly supported the administration’s stance on religious freedom, thanking Mr Trump for addressing the “mass slaughter” of Christians in Nigeria during a United Nations appearance.

She has also shared official White House content relating to anti-trans and anti-immigration policies.
