Amira, 24, moved to the city centre two years ago.

“I didn’t know this was happening, it is a big surprise to me,” she said.

“It makes me feel happy as a Manchester resident. I think it will be benefit to the North.

Amira also said she hopes the government’s presence in the city doesn’t increase cost of living in Manchester.

“I hope it doesn’t put costs up as Manchester is already getting more expensive in general,” she said.

“But if more people come here, the cafe I work at could get busier and I could get more hours.”

Others shared similar concerns about potential pitfalls.

City centre homeowner Antonio Climaco, 46, said he owns a flat just a minute on foot from Albert Square.

“For people who own homes they will be happy because their value will be getting bigger, but for people trying to get on the ladder, it is a problem,” he said.

But Antonio also had concerns about potential traffic and travel issues.

“When events happen nearby here it is complete chaos because they will fence all around the area and traffic is bad enough here already,” Antonio said.

“So if we get more of that it could be more chaotic.”
