The Daily Telegraph, external headline declares national debt has risen above three-trillion pounds as the government is estimated to borrow “four-thousand pounds per second”. The paper is quoting the Taxpayer’s Alliance – a group which campaigns for lower taxes and believes public debt had hit a historic high in recent days based on the trajectory of spending.

The Sun’s front page shows a woman being held on the ground by “taser-wielding” police, external after what it calls a “stab rampage” in London’s West End. The paper says there was a 15-minute standoff with the suspect.

The i Paper, external leads on an exclusive from the Education Minister Lucy Powell, in which she says schools will get new pupil attendance targets to crack down on “stay at home Fridays”. It says sickness and intense heat are among the factors in concerning absence rates.

And The Guardian, external reports on the latest threat to pubs: a potential ban on so-called “vertical drinking”. London’s Westminster Council – which oversees Soho and the West End – has recommended pubs discourage “excessive drunkenness” by limiting ordering at the bar and drinking standing up. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, hopes to use new powers coming to him to stop councils from “overreaching”, the paper says.
