The fallout from the US midterm elections features on most of the morning’s front pages, including the Financial Times, external, which says Americans delivered a “crushing rebuke” to Donald Trump, after a campaign dominated by the spiralling cost of living. The Daily Mail, external agrees, arguing voters passed a “damning verdict” on the president because they were “enraged” by high inflation and rising fuel prices.

The Times, external says Mr Trump has entered a “lame duck period” after a series of “history-making moments”, including the election of America’s first Muslim senator. According to the Daily Mirror, external, Abdul El-Sayed won in Michigan “despite a vile smear campaign” after voters grew sick of the president’s “bullying” and “narcissism”.

With the headline, “Vance Turns On Trump”, the Daily Telegraph, external highlights how the US vice president has blamed the Iran war for the Republicans’ humiliation. It says JD Vance is now “desperately trying to distance himself” from the conflict, in what’s described as a “first move towards a possible 2028 White House run”. The Guardian, external warns that Donald Trump is “psychologically ill-equipped” to deal with the spotlight that is leaving him to focus on potential candidates. But the paper suggests that such a shift could “eat away” at what it calls the president’s “cult-like dominance” of the Republican party.

The Sun, external says the FBI is to search lock-ups in Hollywood, rented by the father of the Duchess of Sussex, as part of an investigation into allegations of child sexual abuse. The paper says Thomas Markle’s son was interviewed by agents after he informed them about the two storage units. Markle has called the claims against him “sick lies”.

The Daily Express, external features the concerns of residents in the North Yorkshire village of Linton-on-Ouse, where the government plans to house more than 1,200 asylum seekers on a former RAF base. Writing in the paper, the shadow home secretary, Chris Philp, says anyone who thinks families will carry on as normal when hundreds of men are camped at the end of their road has never had to walk a teenage daughter home in the dark. Ministers say the site is designed to be as self-sufficient as possible to reduce the impact on the local community.
