Passengers across Britain will have the opportunity to snap up millions of cut-price train tickets when the Great British Rail Sale returns next week.

Running from January 6-January 12, the week-long promotion offers reductions of more than 50 per cent on numerous advance and off-peak fares.

The discounted tickets will be valid for journeys between 13 January and 25 March 2026, covering thousands of routes throughout the country.

Almost every train operator is participating in the sale, handing travellers options spanning the entire nation.

The sale period is meant to coincide with planning opportunities for half-term holidays, weekend trips, and regular commuting.

Among the bargains, travellers heading to the capital from Portsmouth can secure tickets to London Waterloo for just £10 – a 59 per cent reduction on standard fares.

Those with international travel plans can also cash in, with prices from Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Airport dropping to a mere £1.20.

The sale has been hailed as a way to make the railway an attractive option for museum visits, business appointments, or catching flights from regional airports.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: “The Rail Sale is back, and it means further discounts for passengers as we freeze rail fares for the first time in three decades to help ease the cost of living.

“We all want to see cheaper rail travel, so whether you’re planning a half-term getaway, or visiting friends or family, this sale offers huge reductions.

“It’s all part of our plans to build a railway owned by the public, that works for the public.”

The promotion marks the fourth consecutive year of the initiative.

During last year’s sale, more than one million tickets were purchased, generating over £9 million in revenue for the rail industry while delivering average savings of approximately £8 per journey for customers.

Jacqueline Starr, executive chairwoman and CEO of Rail Delivery Group, said: “The Rail Sale gives people even more reasons to choose rail, whether it’s reconnecting with loved ones or exploring new places.”

She added that railways support local economies and providing a more eco-friendly travel option.

VisitBritain’s CEO Patricia Yates also encouraged Britons to take advantage of the promotion to see more of the country.

“Whether it’s a cultural break in one of our vibrant regional cities, a jet-setting stay at a world-famous filming backdrop or the friendly welcome from our picturesque coastal and rural destinations, Britain has something for everyone to enjoy,” she said.

Among the biggest savings are journeys from Exeter to London Waterloo, dropping by 76 per cent from £41.70 to £10.

Newcastle to Middlesbrough will see prices slashed by 62 per cent from £5.20 to £2.

And fares from Nottingham or Sheffield to London will be cut by half – dropping to £23 and £25.50 respectively.
