The King hopes he can bring Commonwealth leaders and investors together, despite a political row over whether Britain should or shouldn’t apologise for historical slavery.

Speaking ahead of King Charles’s keynote speech at the Heads of Government Meeting tomorrow in Antigua, a Palace Spokesperson told GB News that His Majesty believes “lasting solutions come from collaboration between Governments, business, investors, philanthropy and civil society.”

It is understood King Charles has not altered his address, despite Prime Minister Andy Burnham claiming he would be “open” to the idea of Britain apologising for its role in the transatlantic slave trade, and reportedly is considering offering more financial assistance to former colonies of the British Empire.

His Majesty remains above politics, and any apology decision rests solely with his Government.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson told GB News: “As Head of the Commonwealth, His Majesty’s contribution is best understood as one of inspiring and convening rather than policy-making: helping bring people together from both the public and private sectors across the whole family of 56 nations, encouraging practical collaboration and creating momentum behind ideas that are now moving through Commonwealth channels.

“In that sense, His Majesty’s most significant contribution has been helping to connect leaders, institutions and investors, many of whom he knows personally from his many years of international diplomacy, around shared areas of interest and concern, creating the conditions in which ambitious Commonwealth-led initiatives can emerge and succeed.

“You will be aware that the motto for Chogm 2026 is ‘Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.’

“Indeed, the recurring theme of the Chogm agenda is that Governments cannot solve today’s challenges alone.

“This closely reflects the King’s longstanding belief that lasting solutions come from collaboration between Governments, business, investors, philanthropy and civil society.”

LATEST ROYAL DEVELOPMENTS

King Charles’s speech is expected to address Britain’s colonial legacy with “unflinching honesty” and will look to a fairer future through investment, trade and international cooperation, helping to create a richer and more resilient Commonwealth.

Plans for a Commonwealth-backed insurance scheme to help vulnerable countries recover faster from natural disasters are expected to be on the agenda this week.

Palace sources stressed the King’s role is to “inspire and convene” rather than make policy.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expected to join the King this evening.
