Princess Kate appeared to wipe away a tear as she watched the National Service of Remembrance from the balcony of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office building today.

The Princess of Wales stood alongside Queen Camilla as the nation observed the two-minute silence, and wreaths were laid at the Cenotaph in central London.

Kate briefly lifted her hand to her face during the silence, in a moment captured by photographers as the crowds below stood in stillness.

The mother-of-three wore a Catherine Walker black structured coat with a high lace-detail neckline, paired with a custom-made £1,295 Lock & Co wide-brimmed black hat and pearl drop earrings.

A single red poppy was pinned to her left lapel. The Queen also wore black, including a wide-brimmed hat trimmed with fur, and a triple poppy brooch.

The central balcony where the two senior royal women stood overlooks the Cenotaph, where King Charles, Prince William and Prince Edward led the national act of remembrance.

Veterans, serving personnel, representatives of the Commonwealth and political leaders gathered to pay respects to those who lost their lives in conflict.

The Princess of Wales attended the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall last night with her son, Prince George.

The 12-year-old joined her in the royal box for the commemorative event, which included performances, tributes and testimonies honouring members of the Armed Forces.

Prince William was absent from the festival as he returned to the UK from official engagements in Brazil.

Today’s balcony appearance forms part of the annual remembrance weekend, during which members of the Royal Family take part in events commemorating those who have served.

The Princess of Wales has attended the Cenotaph service for many years, standing on the balcony to observe the wreath-laying ceremony below.

The National Service of Remembrance remains one of the most significant fixtures in the royal calendar.

A two-minute silence was held at 11am, during which London traffic paused, veterans on parade lowered their standards, and the gathered crowds bowed their heads.

King Charles, as Sovereign and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, laid the first wreath at the Cenotaph.

Prince William followed on behalf of the nation. Prince Edward also took part, laying a wreath in his role as Colonel of the Scots Guards.

Princess Kate remained on the balcony throughout, watching the proceedings with Queen Camilla and other members of the Royal Family positioned on separate balconies.

After the silence, the Last Post was played before the ceremony concluded with prayers and music.

Kate left the balcony shortly after the service in keeping with the formal structure of the commemoration.
