Princess Kate has finally addressed her “blonde” hairstyle after causing a fan frenzy earlier this year.

The Princess of Wales disclosed that her newly lightened hair resulted from natural sun exposure during her summer sailing holiday.

During a backstage encounter with actress Su Pollard at Wednesday evening’s Royal Variety Performance, Kate explained the transformation of her signature brunette locks.

When Ms Pollard complimented the royal’s noticeably lighter hairstyle, Kate responded: “It used to be brown, but it’s gone light in the sunshine.”

The 43-year-old princess had spent her summer break aboard a superyacht navigating the Greek islands, where Mediterranean sun exposure naturally lightened her hair.

The revelation came during the glittering gala at the Royal Albert Hall, where Kate appeared alongside Prince William.

Her honey-toned highlights marked a departure from her traditional chestnut shade, creating what hair professionals have termed a “bronde” effect.

The royal couple made their entrance at the prestigious charity event, with Kate stunning in an emerald velvet evening dress from German luxury brand Talbot Runhof.

She accessorised with the Greville chandelier earrings, diamond pieces by Cartier that belonged to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

William accompanied his wife in traditional black tie attire for the rare formal evening engagement.

The couple’s arrival prompted state trumpeters to herald their entrance to the Royal box, whilst Welsh opera performer Katherine Jenkins delivered the national anthem.

Kate’s appearance marked her initial attendance at the variety show since completing her cancer treatment.

The princess has displayed varying hair shades at recent public engagements, prompting speculation about multiple colour treatments.

Her September visit to the Natural History Museum alongside Prince William showcased particularly blonde tones, whilst her appearance at England’s Red Roses rugby match revealed seemingly darker tresses.

These variations are likely due to environmental factors, such as different lighting and styling.

Kate’s museum appearance featured flowing waves that captured light to emphasise blonde highlights.

Conversely, her sleek pulled-back rugby styling combined with cooler stadium lighting created a darker appearance.

The Royal Variety Performance raises funds for entertainment industry professionals requiring assistance, with proceeds supporting the Royal Variety Charity’s mental health initiatives launched last year. This cause aligns closely with William and Kate’s longstanding advocacy for mental wellbeing support.

Wednesday’s show featured comedian Jason Manford as host, with highlights including an exclusive Paddington The Musical performance and a 400-strong cast celebrating Les Misérables’ 40th anniversary.

The evening concluded with performers filling the aisles whilst confetti descended from the ceiling. Following the performances, the royal couple met backstage with all participating acts, including a special encounter with Paddington.
