British icon Jaguar has celebrated its 90th anniversary by displaying its first and most recent models in London.

To commemorate its 90th year in operation, Jaguar exhibited its design evolution, with its first model, the SS Jaguar, and its most recent release, the Type 00, outside the Chancery Rosewood in the UK capital.

Jaguar said the two models were “united by vision”, despite production of the iconic vehicles being nine decades apart.

It chose the Chancery Rosewood, in Grosvenor Square, as the location to display the vehicle for its fusion of mid-century architecture and modernist lines.

The SS Jaguar was the first model to carry the Jaguar brand and was emblematic of Sir William Lyons’ philosophy of “copy nothing”.

The model was a “bold departure” from the typical convention of the early 1900s and aimed to set the brand apart from its counterparts on the road.

In contrast, the Jaguar Type 00 is the brand’s biggest step into the electric vehicle space, having first unveiled the model last year.

The “London Red” colourway has never been seen before as Jaguar plans to reveal its first production model next year, which will be a luxury GT.

Jaguar said the bespoke shade was inspired by the hues of Kensington, and the redbrick Victorian architecture in London’s most historic boroughs.

It added that London Red was a “tribute to timeless artistry and bold design, handcrafted by Jaguar’s in‑house materiality team”.

Commenting on the anniversary of the brand, Rawdon Glover, director of Jaguar, said it was fitting that it was able to display the history and evolution of the company.

He said: “Jaguar has always been a pioneer of originality – defined by design excellence and a fearless, forward‑thinking spirit.

“Ahead of the launch of our production vehicle next year, it’s vital we continue to remind people of what makes Jaguar unique: being bold, unexpected, and unapologetically different.

“With Type 00, we’re challenging conventions in the automotive industry, just as the SS Jaguar did in its time.”

Jaguar unveiled the Type 00 at Miami Art Week a year ago in a move that sparked division and propelled the brand to the top of public consciousness.

It has maintained that it will be an electric-only brand in the years to come, having paused sales of new vehicles a year ago.
