Diesel drivers will soon pay the highest price for fuel ever seen in the UK as the US-Iran war continues to influence oil prices, sending costs at the pump soaring.

Fresh data from RAC Fuel Watch states that diesel has risen to 195.32p per litre, more than 37 per cent more expensive than when the conflict in the Middle East began at the end of February.

Prices are rising by an average of 0.6p per day, with a litre of fuel rising almost 12p since the start of the month. Five pence has been added in the last week alone.

The RAC outlined that the price of diesel has not been this high since August 17, 2022, in the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, said: “Unfortunately, it’s looking increasingly likely that the average price of diesel will reach a new all-time high next week as a litre now stands at 195.32p, just under 4p off the record of 199.09p set on 25 June 2022.”

Motorists now face costs of £94.61 when filling up a standard 55-litre tank equipped in a standard family car.

This is more than £21.50 more expensive than at the start of the US-Iran war, which is a staggering 30 per cent increase.

Similarly, a full tank of diesel costs £107.43, while some van drivers will end up paying significantly more compared to the start of the conflict.

“This means the average household which buys fuel twice a month is having to pay an extra £43 for petrol and £58 for diesel compared to the start of the conflict,” Mr Williams added.

Oil prices have not fallen below $100 (£75) over the last week, piling further pressure on drivers across the world.

This has forced motorists to pay some of the highest prices ever seen at the pumps, including $6.30 (£4.72) per gallon in the United States and €2.43 (£1.09) in Germany.
