England fast bowler Brydon Carse will face no further action from the police after an investigation into an alleged assault in Derby last month was dropped.
Footage of Carse appeared on social media, showing him in handcuffs and surrounded by police on Sunday, 23 August. The footage was captured in the early hours of that day.
It emerged that the 31-year-old had been arrested and then de-arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.
Later that week, after Carse had been removed from the England squad for the second Test against Pakistan, Derbyshire Police confirmed it was looking at allegations of assault.
In a statement released on Friday, the police said: “An investigation into reports of an assault in Derby city centre has been closed.
“Officers attended Molly Malones in The Wardwick, Derby, in the early hours of Sunday, 23 August.
“A man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and was then de-arrested after his details were taken by officers.”
Carse will now be subject to an investigation from the Cricket Regulator. The Regulator has not commented. The England and Wales Cricket Board and Carse have both been approached for comment.
The incident in Derby was the latest in a string of late-night alcohol-related controversies to hit the England men’s team in the past year.
After Carse was dropped from the second Test against Pakistan, Test captain Joe Root said he was “hacked off” and revealed he had addressed his team to make his feelings clear.
Though Carse has continued to be play for his county Durham, he was also left out of the England squads for the third Test against Pakistan and the white-ball series with Sri Lanka.
After he was omitted from the games against Sri Lanka, the ECB confirmed that Carse is available for selection.
“Whilst Brydon was available for selection, he has not been picked for the Sri Lanka series squad,” said an ECB statement. “Given recent events, we feel it is important for him to work through the issues that led to the Derby incident and take time for a proper reset.
“This decision does not prejudge the outcome of any investigation.”
Earlier this week, England white-ball coach Brendon McCullum said Carse needs to “get his house in order” before returning to international cricket.
Carse did not play in Durham’s game against Worcestershire this week. The county said he was “unwell”.
