Television veteran Johnny Ball has accused the BBC of ageism, claiming the corporation has a pattern of discarding presenters once they pass the age of 50.

The 88-year-old made the remarks after his daughter Zoe, 55, missed out on the Strictly Come Dancing gig earlier this year.

Ms Ball has since departed the BBC after her stint as a Radio 2 regular, and found a new hosting role on Greatest Hits Radio where she fronts Zoe Ball in the Afternoon every weekday.

Speaking at the Dorchester Literary Festival, where he was promoting his memoir An Autobiography: Stories That Have To Be Told, Mr Ball delivered his verdict on his daughter’s career shift.

As he reflected on his lengthy stint fronting beloved children’s programmes, Mr Ball told the audience: “I did Play School for 17 years; I wrote nearly all of Play Away, then I did Think Of A Number and Think Again.

“I loved every minute of it. But what happens when you are 50 at the BBC? Gone!”

Referring to his daughter’s situation specifically, he added [according to The Sun]: “Zoe was 54. Gone! You cannot believe it because we gave so much to the BBC.”

Ms Ball made history as the first woman to present both the Radio 1 and Radio 2 breakfast shows during a career at the BBC stretching back to the 1990s.

She stepped away from the Radio 2 morning programme in late 2024 after six years at the helm, citing a desire to spend more time with her family.

Before her exit, she ranked among the corporation’s highest-paid female talent, earning close to £1 million annually.

She made a brief comeback in May 2025, taking on a Saturday afternoon slot, but left the station entirely before the end of the year, with Emma Willis stepping into her place.

In September, Ms Ball joined Greatest Hits Radio, following in the footsteps of fellow former Radio 2 presenter Ken Bruce, who had previously made the same move.

GB News has contacted the BBC for comment on Mr Ball’s claims.

Ms Ball herself has never suggested she was pushed out of the BBC due to her age.

Upon announcing her move to Greatest Hits Radio in July, she spoke warmly of her former BBC Radio 2 boss Helen Thomas, thanking her for being “so brilliantly supportive” throughout her time at the station.

The BBC has, however, faced ageism claims before. Last year, the corporation reached a settlement with four BBC News presenters who had brought an employment tribunal alleging age and sex discrimination.

The BBC accepted no liability as part of the resolution and maintained that its application processes had been “rigorous and fair”. The presenters in question were Martine Croxall, Karin Giannone, Kasia Madera and Annita McVeigh.

Mr Ball, meanwhile, is no stranger to speaking out about the changing state of affairs in modern-day broadcasting.

In an interview with GB News in 2025, he explained why he found the presence of cancel culture “frightening” in today’s landscape.

“(Comedy) always echoes the times, and you need to meet the audience on their terms, which is their present-day thinking. You do need to do that. That’s the worry for me about modern comedians is: how do you toe the line?” he said.

“People say so many things that are taboo, but there was nothing taboo in our day! It never occurred to us to go beyond a certain level.

“I never, ever swore, not one word, but I did find ways to be cheeky and then apologise. (Cancel culture) is frightening. People aren’t thinking.”
