The Princess of Wales met with philanthropist Melinda French Gates on October 8 to explore ways to work together through The Royal Foundation to support young people’s development.
Ms French Gates, who founded Pivotal, a network of organisations dedicated to driving social progress and broadening opportunities for women and young people, joined Catherine for a conversation centred on their mutual commitment to youth wellbeing.
Catherine, photographed in a black suit paired with a white top, sat down with Ms French Gates, who wore a maroon knitted midi dress, to discuss strengthening children’s sense of belonging and ability to thrive.
The Princess’s philanthropic efforts have in recent years centred on early childhood, notably through the establishment of The Royal Foundation for Early Childhood in 2021.
Christian Guy, Executive Director of The Royal Foundation for Early Childhood, spoke about the significance of equipping young people to “build the foundations for life.”
Reflecting on the discussion, he highlighted the energy generated by a common conviction that despite the considerable difficulties facing today’s children, their potential remains remarkable.
“What gave the session particular energy was a shared belief that while today’s children face considerable challenges, they also carry extraordinary potential,” Mr Guy said.
“With supportive relationships, a sense of belonging and opportunities to discover who they are and what they might contribute, every young person can build the confidence, resilience and sense of purpose they need for the future.”
The session drew on the legacy of initiatives including Heads Together, The Centre for Early Childhood, and Pivotal’s work in the United States.
Mr Guy expressed deep gratitude for the vision and dedication that both Catherine and Ms French Gates bring to this area of work, describing their leadership as a reflection of the belief that meaningful change is achievable.
“We are so grateful for the vision, ambition and commitment that both The Princess and Melinda bring to this work,” he said.
“Their leadership reflects a belief that change is possible, and that investing in the healthy development of children and young people is one of the most powerful investments we can make for our world today and tomorrow.”
Looking ahead, he confirmed that The Royal Foundation would be working alongside Ms French Gates and Pivotal over the coming months to identify practical ways of advancing this agenda.
“At a time of division, disconnection and uncertainty, it has never been more important to help young people build the foundations for life,” Mr Guy added.
On October 16, Catherine shared a video through the Prince and Princess of Wales’s social media channels unveiling a fresh research initiative under The Royal Foundation, aimed at understanding how the natural world can bolster social and emotional growth in babies and young children.
“New scientific research shows just how important nature is for our physical and psychological wellbeing,” the Princess said.
“Nature is such an extraordinary environment for us all and in this tech-driven, digital age, spending time outdoors has never been more important.”
Catherine expressed her aspiration that the practical, nature-focused research would help create supportive environments, making the outdoors more accessible for babies, young children and their families throughout the UK.
The Shaping Us campaign, launched in 2023, has previously been described as Catherine’s “life’s work.”
