Broader attitudes towards the monarchy and the Royal Family as an institution remain in positive territory, with clear majorities of between 55 and 58 per cent viewing both favourably. A persistent minority of 34 to 35 per cent, however, take a negative view.

More than half the country (52 per cent) believe the monarchy offers good value for money, though nearly a third (31 per cent) feel taxpayers are getting a poor return from the Sovereign Grant. Britons are also far more inclined to describe themselves as proud of the institution (44 per cent) than embarrassed by it (18 per cent).

Abolishing the monarchy remains a fringe position. Some 64 per cent of the public believe Britain should continue as a kingdom, a figure consistent with the 61 to 67 per cent range seen throughout Charles’s four-year reign. One in four Britons (25 per cent), though, would prefer an elected head of state.

The generational fault line in attitudes towards the monarchy is striking. Among over-65s, 81 per cent back Britain remaining a kingdom, with just 14 per cent dissenting. Fewer than half of 18-to-24-year-olds (46 per cent), however, support retaining the Royal Family, while a third would opt for an elected head of state instead.
