An 80-year-old man has been charged after a 95-year-old woman was allegedly bound and threatened during an attempted robbery in Little Hulton, Salford.

Edwin Morrison of Manchester Road, Worsley, was arrested by Greater Manchester Police on Thursday.

The elderly suspect has been charged with two counts of false imprisonment, attempted robbery, intentional strangulation and common assault.

He has been remanded in custody ahead of a scheduled appearance at Salford and Manchester Magistrates later today.

The alleged offence occurred on Tuesday, January 27, at approximately 11am at an address on Belcroft Drive.

Greater Manchester Police has reassured residents that investigators believe this to be an isolated incident.

Detectives initially believed the man had approached the victim by offering to clean her windows, though investigators now think he asked about bin collection day before entering her home.

Once inside the property, the suspect allegedly bound the woman’s hands together and demanded she hand over money and her purse.

The alleged attempted robbery was interrupted when an acquaintance of the victim arrived at the address.

This second woman was grabbed by the suspect before he fled the scene.

Fortunately, no injuries were sustained during the ordeal, and GMP officers continue to provide support to the victim.

Detective Inspector Paul Davies, from GMP’s Salford district, said: “When this report came in to us yesterday, we were shocked by the very nature of it.”

He confirmed the force then “immediately utilised all resources available as part of our investigation.”

“I am glad that we now have someone arrested in connection with this incident, and enquiries remain ongoing.

“I would ask the community to not speculate in order to allow the criminal justice process to run its proper course.

“I want to thank everyone who has shared our appeals and got in touch with us – your assistance is truly appreciated and helps us provide the best service possible.”

GMP have encouraged anyone with information on the case to come forward.

The force can be contacted on 101 or through its Live Chat service, quoting log 1082.
