Prince William and Princess Kate share a unique connection with Irish popstar Chris de Burgh, it has been revealed.

Famous for his hit songs, Lady in Red and A Spaceman Came Travelling, Mr de Burgh is related to the Prince and Princess of Wales through a distant relation spanning back to the 14th century.

According to genealogical research, the trio are all linked to King Edward III and his wife Philippa of Hainault, who worked as his political advisor in 1346.

Their son Lionel of Antwerp, Duke of Clarence, married the Irish heiress Elizabeth de Burgh, Countess of Ulster, who is distantly related to Mr de Burgh.

Agnes Gascogine, their five-times great-granddaughter, married landowner Sir Thomas Fairfax, which created the connection between William, Kate and the Irish popstar.

It was previously revealed that the Prince and Princess of Wales are fifteenth cousins, with Kate’s link to Mr de Burgh discovered in 2013.

Speaking at the time, the Lady in Red star said: “I was unaware that there is a distant connection between the de Burgh family and the Middletons.

“There are probably many others also connected to both families. At least that will give us something to talk about should we ever have a cup of tea together.”

It appears Prince William is related to another musician, after his wife played the piano alongside his daughter, Princess Charlotte, at the Together At Christmas Carol Concert.

The pair featured in the broadcast of the service, accompanied by a voiceover from the Princess of Wales reading a letter handed to guests at Westminster Abbey.

The duo played Holm Sound by Scottish composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Erland Cooper.

Mr Cooper joined the duo on the day of the performance and provided some guidance.

The composer’s work is inspired by nature and connection, themes which resonate deeply with Kate.

Holm Sound was written and composed by Mr Cooper for his mother, Charlotte.

The princesses often play the piece together at home, with the special moment being recorded in the Inner Hall at Windsor Castle.

The broadcast went out on ITV1 and ITVX.

BBC Studios Events and The Royal Foundation co-produced the programme, which included two special films showcasing individuals and organisations who have demonstrated love and compassion to others during difficult times.

Kate has played the piano at previous festive concerts in the past, including in 2021, when she put on a heartfelt performance at a Westminster Abbey service which aired on TV.

During that appearance, she amazed onlookers by playing the piano to support singer Tom Walker with a moving song.

The pair played Mr Walker’s Christmas single For Those Who Can’t Be Here together, with Kate admitting that she felt “quite nervous”.
