Buckingham Palace officials remain hopeful about the prospects of the US State Visit despite its challenges, sources have claimed.
King Charles and Queen Camilla will touch down in Washington DC on Monday for a four-day state visit coinciding with the 250th anniversary of American independence, in what British officials hope will mend the strained transatlantic alliance.
The relationship between the two nations has been damaged by the US and Israel’s conflict in Iran, requiring what sources describe as a fresh diplomatic approach.
A Palace source told the Times: “We’re optimistic about the visit while acknowledging the complexities and challenges that it presents.
“But overall Their Majesties are excited about a programme that celebrates the connection between two nations and two peoples.”
The royal couple will stay at Blair House, situated just steps from the White House, with President Trump personally overseeing preparations for their arrival.
The historic property owes its role as a guest residence to Winston Churchill, whose habit of wandering the White House in search of early morning conversations with President Roosevelt prompted Eleanor Roosevelt to seek alternative accommodation for visiting dignitaries. The US Government purchased the building in 1942.
Their Majesties will begin the visit with a private tea hosted by the President and the First Lady.

The atmosphere throughout is expected to be relaxed, echoing the informal “hotdog summit” of 1939 when George VI sampled the American snack for the first time during a New York picnic.
Guests attending a Washington garden party have been advised that hats are discouraged, a notable departure from Buckingham Palace conventions.
The President has chosen a white-tie state dinner over a traditional banquet, with tiaras also absent from proceedings.
The King’s address to Congress on Tuesday is anticipated to be a call for unity between the two nations.

The speech has been carefully crafted with input from Downing Street, with multiple drafts exchanged between Palace officials and Number 10.
President Trump expressed confidence in the monarch’s ability to bridge the diplomatic divide during a BBC phone interview this week.
“Absolutely,” President Trump said when asked whether the King could achieve reconciliation. “[He’s] a fantastic man. I know him well. I’ve known him for years. He’s a brave man, and he’s a great man.”
The address is expected to reference historical moments when Britain and America stood together, particularly significant given Mr Trump’s previous criticism that Nato allies remained “a little off the front lines” during the Afghanistan conflict.

The itinerary includes a day trip to New York ahead of the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, evoking a period when transatlantic solidarity was unquestioned. The late Queen Elizabeth II memorably declared after the tragedy: “Grief is the price we pay for love.”
In Virginia, the King plans to meet indigenous communities to discuss their responses to climate change, with social cohesion expected to feature in his remarks.
A Palace source said: “This is the first chance for America to see them in action as King and Queen and see how the King has evolved into his role in a very human way, engaging with people as both man and monarch.”
The visit will not include meetings with Jeffrey Epstein’s victims, with officials citing ongoing UK police inquiries.
