Broadcaster Duncan Barkes has warned Labour is “starting to unravel” less than 18 months into Government.

Speaking to GB News, he said it is “no surprise” rumours of a leadership contest are circulating after days of growing unrest on the Labour benches.

Sir Keir Starmer has privately vowed to fight off any challenge from Labour rivals looking to replace him as Prime Minister.

Speaking to The People’s Channel, Mr Barkes said: “Less than 18 months into Government and we’re seeing the Labour Party appearing to unravel.

“It doesn’t matter who’s saying this, everyone will deny it’s the case. But I’m cynical enough, after years of talking and writing about politics, to have reached the conclusion that every MP thinks they can do a far better job than the leader of their party.

“We shouldn’t be massively surprised about this. But this is the kind of headline Keir Starmer doesn’t want to see this morning and it’s blown up quite quickly.

“I went to bed last night, quite early. This wasn’t around. I woke up this morning at about three and it was everywhere.

“We have this story circulating and some of the runners and riders are quite interesting.

“If there were to be a leadership contest, you’ve got some big names being mentioned.

He added: “Some MPs think the Budget on November 26 could be a trigger if it doesn’t deliver what Labour MPs are hoping for, especially if it includes an income tax rise.

“That would break a manifesto pledge and be very difficult to defend.”

“If there were to be a leadership campaign or contest, Angela Rayner would be seen as the kingmaker.”

Sir Keir, whose Labour Party is expected to take a hammering in May’s local elections, is bracing for growing pressure after Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivers her tax-hiking Budget on November 26.

Downing Street is said to have gone into “full bunker mode”, with critics claiming the PM’s team has stepped up briefings against his potential rivals.

No10 was accused of having a “toxic” culture earlier this year amid briefings against Angela Rayner, Lucy Powell and Lisa Nandy.

However, a spokesman for Mr Streeting dismissed rumours of his leadership ambition as “categorically untrue”.
