Personal trainers have long advised clients to start the day with a substantial breakfast. But the guidance has since shifted, according to physician Danielle Kelvas, MD, who has watched morning nutrition advice evolve considerably over her 16 years in medicine.

Intermittent fasting, typically defined as a 16-hour overnight fast, may be one of the most effective approaches to weight loss, provided it is not offset by overeating later in the day.

But the timing of exercise appears to matter as well. In fact, Dr Kelvas cites research suggesting that exercising first thing in the morning is optimal for BMI reduction because it jump-starts metabolism.

She specifically recommends activity between 7am and 9am, as it may produce greater weight reduction than exercise later in the day, but she adds that any exercise is better than none.

Breakfast choices should also be tailored to this exercise routine. Sugar options like muffins, pancakes, juice and sweetened coffee drinks are best avoided in favour of lean protein, according to Dr Kelvas.

Eggs are a good option for most people, she says, barring anyone trying to lower their cholesterol reading.

Nitrate-free bacon or sausage, though higher in fat, is equally preferable to a sugar-heavy start to the day.

What about carbohydrates?

Anyone who craves carbohydrates for breakfast is advised to reach for steel-cut oats rather than pre-sweetened varieties.

Unsweetened yoghurt, even if lightly sweetened with honey or fruit, offers a protein-rich alternative.

Dr Kelvas follows an intermittent fasting routine herself and drinks probiotic beverages like Japanese koso and kombucha, alongside no more than two cups of coffee a day.

She points to research indicating that probiotic beverages are best consumed on an empty stomach, which is why she takes hers first thing, a habit she links to supporting gut health during weight loss.

In a recent conversation with GB News, Dr Farrell cautioned against fixating on the scale alone, noting that gradual muscle loss can quietly lower daily energy expenditure even when diet remains unchanged.

Natural fluctuations in appetite across the day, on the other hand, can lead people to underestimate their total calorie intake and miss critical gaps in protein at key meals.

The expert explained that taken together, body composition and eating patterns offer far more insight than protein totals in isolation.
