Data suggests that some of the heaviest vehicles on the market would be liable to pay thousands of pounds extra if a tax were to be introduced.
The Peugeot 5008 plug-in hybrid has a minimum kerb weight of 2,048kg, meaning it would face an illustrative charge of £4,480 based on the T&E proposals.
Other popular vehicles would face extra costs, including the Hyundai Tucson (£3,000), Kia Sportage (£2,420) and the Jaecoo 7 (£400).
Mike Fazal, CEO of Leasing.com, said: “What’s clear from our analysis is that the higher 2,000kg threshold would keep many of the most popular electric SUVs outside the proposed levy.
“But not all of them would escape it, and for heavier models the additional cost could still run into the thousands.”
