A safety warning has been issued for a popular Tesla product in the UK amid fears that an issue could lead to a fire.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued a product safety report for the Tesla Powerwall 2.

Tesla’s Powerwall 2 is an AC battery system for residential or light commercial use, originating in the United States.

The OPSS outlined that the battery technology was not counterfeit, nor did it provide a risk level.

It warned that the product “presents a risk of fire as certain battery cells within affected units may develop internal defects over time”.

An investigation found that battery cells manufactured by a third party could contain excessive lithium plating.

This can lead to cracking of the cell casing, potentially leading to an internal short circuit and subsequent thermal runaway.

The OPSS stated that this increases the risk of the battery overheating and catching fire, prompting the product safety report.

As a result of the hazard, the Tesla Powerwall fails to meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016.

Corrective action has been confirmed by Tesla and published through its own website and the OPSS website.

Tesla has remotely discharged most affected Powerwall 2 units pending replacement, while any remaining affected units are being discharged by Tesla technicians.

Customers have been told to keep their Powerwall 2 online and check the Tesla app for a notification to confirm whether the unit is affected.

If a Powerwall 2 replacement is needed, customers are advised to contact their original Tesla Certified Installer to arrange a new installation.

As with the vast majority of product safety reports and recalls, any affected Powerwall 2 units will be replaced free of charge.

Tesla has reassured owners of the Powerwall that their solar generation will continue, although backup power won’t be available until the replacement is installed.

The Elon Musk-owned brand is prioritising affected customers when scheduling removal and installation.
