A teenager came to the rescue of a Derbyshire Police officer whose bike chain snapped while on patrol.

The youngster, named locally as Kieran, jumped in to fix the chain of the bike belonging to PCSO Colledge from Heanor and Langley Mill Police Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT).

Not long after, PCSO Colledge, who works for the Amber Valley community policing team, was back on his way.

Now, officers from the team have launched the Heanor & Langley Mill Community Hero Award, with plans to recognise a local hero every three months.

Residents on social media were quick to praise the youngster’s actions.

One said: “Credit to himself and his family. Well done young man hope you can teach your peers the same attitude xx”

Another added: “Excellent mate, shame the country isn’t full of people like you. Great parents,”

A third said: “Well done your parents must be so proud of you. Your parents have bought you up the right way.”

PCSO Colledge said: “Our community is full of heroes, adults and young people who provide kind gestures and people who go the extra mile to help others and I would like to start celebrating that more regularly.

“Every quarter we will be recognising an outstanding member of the public with our community hero of the quarter award.

“This is where as a community we can come together to celebrate achievements and spread positivity where it is due: whether you are a volunteer, a young person going out your way to support and help somebody or a business that has gone out their way and made a real difference”.

Anyone who knows someone in the Heanor or Langley Mill area of North Derbyshire who deserves praise for their kind actions, can nominate them for the award via Heanor and Langley Mill Police SNT Facebook page.
