A “demonic” Sudanese asylum seeker who stabbed a young mother whilst she waited for her train home has been sentenced to life in prison.

Deng Chol Majek attacked Rhiannon Whyte with a screwdriver in October 2024 at the Bescot Stadium railway station in Walsall after she finished work at the nearby migrant hotel where he was staying.

Sentencing had been delayed after the verdict last year to allow age verification tests to be conducted on Majek, who claimed at trial he was 19. It has now been established he is in his mid 20s.

Now, he has been sentenced at Coventry Crown Court to life in prison, with a minimum sentence of 29 years. The judge took into account the time serve in prison already, which takes it down to 27 years and 264 days.

Rhiannon’s sister Alex Whyte condemned him for showing “no remorse” and taking “no responsibility for your cowardly actions”, describing him as “demonic and inhumane.”

Rhiannon Whyte’s mother added: “Her name will not be forgotten, she will not be a distant memory. We will keep her alive in our memory. You, however, are an evil nightmare that will be put aside, known only for your cruel and malicious act.

“By the grace of God, I hope you never see the outside world again.”

Majek showed no emotion in the courtroom as this was read to him by an interpreter.
