‘Anti-ageing’ labels have made their way onto more and more beauty products in recent years, but it is not always clear which products are best to use.

Speaking to GB News, a skin care expert with nearly 10 years of practical experience explained how one part of your face is revealing your age more than others.

Certified cosmetologist-aesthetician at OnSkin, Valerie Aparovich, urged Britons to “pay attention to the sensitive area around the eyes”.

She explained: “The skin around the eyes is naturally thinner and more delicate than the rest of the face and loses its firmness and elasticity faster, so the signs of ageing are often most visible here.

“The skin in this area is also more prone to dryness and requires regular moisturising to prevent mimic and age-related wrinkles from forming.”

The skin around the eyes has less fat and fewer oil glands, putting it at great risk of dryness and fine lines. Expressive faces will often cause lines to form more quickly here than in other parts of the face.

So it is worth using good moisturising products to help stop any accelerated ageing. Aparovich continued: “Incorporating a high-quality eye cream can give the skin the tailored support it needs. Eye creams are usually formulated with a more lightweight texture than facial products, so they are better absorbed by delicate skin.

“Usually, they contain higher concentrations of hydrating ingredients and ingredients that address specific concerns of this skin area, such as caffeine for dark circles or mint derivatives for cooling and de-puffing.”

Another important tip when applying products to your face is to “introduce active anti-ageing ingredients”, according to the professional.

She said: “Incorporate an anti-ageing serum or cream formulated with active ingredients that help stimulate collagen production, reduce wrinkles, and keep the skin rejuvenated and evenly toned. The best choices include vitamin C, retinoids, and peptides.

“Besides being a powerful antioxidant protecting the skin from free radical damage, vitamin C stimulates collagen synthesis, promoting the skin’s firmness and elasticity and making decreased skin turgor less pronounced.

“It also possesses brightening properties, helping improve hyperpigmentation, and strengthens capillary walls, reducing the symptoms of couperose skin.”

There has been a lot of research into Vitamin C and its anti-ageing benefits. A systematic review conducted in 2023 found topical vitamin C can improve signs of photoageing, with studies showing smoother, less wrinkled skin and reduced pigmentation.

This is thanks to its antioxidant properties and role in collagen production, although the researchers note that more high-quality trials are needed.

Retinoids are another much-loved anti-ageing ingredient recommended by Aparovich. She said: “Retinoids speed cell turnover and stimulate skin renewal, providing exfoliating and brightening effects. They support collagen and elastin synthesis in the skin, helping to thicken its texture and smooth fine lines and wrinkles over time with regular use.

“Peptides promote collagen synthesis, naturally serving as the building blocks for this structural protein in the skin. They also encourage cellular repair and regeneration mechanisms and act as humectants, helping skin cells retain moisture.”
