Mandie Shilton Godwin, the executive member for transport, said it had been a “massive job”, adding it had “taken an awfully long time”.

She added: “It started in March when the depression was noticed, but it wasn’t until the end of September when the team were absolutely sure what the problem was.

“Once they were sure what the problem was, then they could begin to put it right.

“No one could have anticipated the scale of the void that we found but, once it became apparent, all of our effort went into making sure the site was safe and the road could be reopened.”

A concrete cap is currently being put over the mine shaft.

Work will then need to take place to fill the remaining void beneath the road, and lay a new surface.
