Motorists can expect to find delays along a major motorway until this afternoon after a serious collision prompted a massive police investigation.

The M6 southbound in Staffordshire remains closed between Junction 13 (Stafford) and Junction 12 (Cannock) after an accident last night.

National Highways reported that a serious collision involving a heavy goods vehicle and a van occurred at 11.40pm last night (November 3).

Staffordshire Police have been leading the investigation and remain on the scene to respond to the accident.

West Midlands Ambulance Service also attended the scene, while National Highways resources were also deployed to assist with traffic management.

Specialist crews are working at the scene to clear debris and reopen lanes as soon as possible.

This will depend on the judgment of the collision investigation teams and when they confirm that it is safe to do so.

Traffic maps from National Highways suggest that the incident is not expected to clear until around 1.30pm.

Drivers are also being warned that normal traffic conditions will not return until a similar time.

National Highways confirmed that lanes would remain closed to complete the recovery of the vehicles involved.

It will also give traffic officers the chance to complete emergency barrier repairs on the near side of the carriageway.

There are currently two hours of delays on the approach, with further delays on the A449 diversion.
