Edinburgh dog owners are limbering up to smash the world record for the most dogs wearing Christmas jumpers when the Scottish capital hosts its Santa Paws event this coming Sunday, December 7.

The fuzzy fun day is one of the city’s many free community events this year and organisers hope hundreds of Santa’s little helpers will head down to West Princes Street Gardens.

They can take part in games, photo opportunities with Santa’s elves and lucky pets could even be selected to take part in the best-dressed dog parade.

The last successful world record attempt for dogs dressed in Christmas jumpers was on December 8 2019, when 350 pampered pooches from Barking to Hound-slow took part in a event in Battersea Park organised by Borrow My Doggy and Save the Children to raise money for charity.

Spreading the word ahead of the record attempt, four eager pooches took to West Princes Street Gardens on Tuesday to show of their festive threads.

The advance party included Frankie the Cavapoo, Ellie the Cocker Spaniel, Bernie the King Charles Cavalier and Max the Miniature Schnauzer, all offering passersby a glimpse of Sunday’s potential for furry fun and frolics in the park.

The same day will also see thousands of runners dressed up as Santa Claus descend on the city street in the annual Santa Fun Run with plenty four-legged friends expected to work up an appetite before letting their hair down in the afternoon get together.

Both the Santa Paws and Santa Fun Run events are part of Edinburgh’s Christmas event itinerary for 2025 and raising money for the Wish Upon a Star charity, which grants wishes for children aged 4-16 years suffering from life-threatening or terminal illnesses.

“At Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, we love nothing more than seeing people and pets come together for a good cause.

“Every wagging tail and festive jumper helps raise vital funds and awareness for animals in need across our community — helping us love without limits this Christmas and beyond.”
