A salmonella outbreak potentially connected to eggs brought into the country from abroad has claimed one life and left 207 individuals ill across the United Kingdom.

The UK Health Security Agency confirmed the cases, which were recorded between 11 August last year and 1 August this year, and is now collaborating with the Food Standards Agency to trace the source of the contamination.

The vast majority of confirmed infections — 199 — occurred in England, with Scotland reporting six cases, and Wales and Northern Ireland each recording one. The investigation into the imported eggs remains ongoing.

The outbreak has proved notably severe, with 38 per cent of those affected requiring hospital admission. Two patients developed bloodstream infections described as potentially life-threatening.

The UK Health Security Agency is trying to trace the source of the contamination.

The illness has struck an extraordinarily broad demographic, with victims ranging from infants to individuals aged 90. Salmonella typically produces a self-limiting form of gastroenteritis, though the high hospitalisation rate in this particular outbreak underscores the serious risk it poses, particularly to those with compromised immune systems.

The bacterium ordinarily triggers symptoms such as stomach cramps, diarrhoea, fever and vomiting, though vulnerable groups face a considerably greater danger of complications.

Within England, London bore the brunt of the outbreak, accounting for 47 confirmed cases. Yorkshire and Humber followed as the second most affected region, with 38 infections recorded.

The geographical spread across all four home nations — albeit with the overwhelming concentration in England — points to a widely distributed source of contamination.

Northern Ireland and Wales each saw just a single case, whilst Scotland’s tally stood at six.

The breadth of the outbreak, touching every corner of the kingdom over a period spanning nearly twelve months, has lent urgency to the joint investigation being conducted by public health authorities.

Hannah Charles, lead epidemiologist for gastrointestinal infections at UKHSA, said: “We’re working with Food Standards Agency and other public health agencies to investigate a salmonella outbreak that may be linked to eggs imported from outside of the UK.”

She noted that the infection is most commonly contracted through consuming or handling contaminated food, though person-to-person transmission remains rare. Those experiencing worrying symptoms were advised to reach out to their GP or the out-of-hours service.

Ms Charles outlined straightforward precautions the public ought to follow: “Wash your hands thoroughly after using the bathroom and before preparing and handling food, cook food thoroughly, and if you have any symptoms, avoid handling food for others where possible.”
