The DVLA has announced that drivers will be able to appeal a decision made on converting a vehicle into a motor caravan.

In a new release from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), drivers have been provided with a checklist of what to include when converting a vehicle into a motor caravan.

The DVLA requires certain measures when it considers an application to change the body type description on a V5C registration certificate to motor caravan.

It uses body type to establish vehicle appearance and identification and does not affect the insurance category.

It also doesn’t impact the legislative requirements or speed limits associated with the vehicle.

When applying to change the body type of a vehicle, the DVLA must be satisfied that it meets certain conditions.

The DVLA outlined that this means the body type information held on the vehicle record must describe what a vehicle looks like in traffic.

However, even if a vehicle’s body type is not changed to “motor caravan”, it can still be used for this purpose.

This depends on whether the registered keeper is satisfied that the converted vehicle meets the required internal features for motor caravans.

Owners are responsible for any changes made to the vehicle and must ensure that they do not compromise the safety of the vehicle.

The agency added that registered keepers trying to sell the vehicle must demonstrate that the conversion work has been completed successfully.

The DVLA will only consider changing the body type to “motor caravan” if the V5C logbook registration certificate is one of the following:

  • Ambulance
  • Box van
  • Goods
  • Insulated van
  • Light goods
  • Light van
  • Livestock carrier
  • Luton van
  • Minibus
  • MPV (multi-purpose vehicle)
  • Panel van
  • Specially fitted van
  • Special mobile unit
  • Van with side windows

If an application is rejected, drivers can now reapply to the DVLA, given a recent update to its policy.

Drivers will need the name and address the vehicle is registered to, the vehicle registration number and an image of the latest vehicle logbook (V5C).

The DVLA will then review the application and make an evidence-based decision, which could lead to a new V5C being issued.

If the evidence does not match the criteria, the DVLA will inform the driver and the V5C will remain unchanged.
