Ellie Costello has put Tory MP Matt Vickers on the spot this morning over remarks made by former Home Secretary Priti Patel on GB News yesterday.

Dame Priti, who appeared on The Camilla Tominey Show, compared Reform UK’s policies on welfare and the economy to “National Socialists”.

Dame Priti said: “Let’s be very clear about this. I’m a former Employment Minister, and I legislated to reduce the welfare budget and get people back into work which is what we believe in.

“Reform UK are not Conservatives, and they are making it up as they go. Even in terms of their conduct, they echo aspects of National Socialists.

“But even if a left-wing coalition were to come in, you would still have to take action. They are not Conservatives.”

Speaking about the comments today, GB News host Ellie questioned: “Mr Vickers, can I ask you about Dame Priti Patel? She has criticised Reform UK on Camilla Tominey’s Show on GB News, where she spoke about the party’s policies on welfare and the economy, comparing them to ‘National Socialists’, the Nazis.

“She is not the first Conservative MP to do this. We have also seen Kevin Hollinrake liken the Reform badge to that of the Nazi Party.

“Is this acceptable language from Dame Priti Patel, and is that what she truly thinks of Reform voters? Does she need reminding that Reform voters are often from the same base as the Conservatives, with many being former Tory voters?”

Mr Vickers replied: “Well, I wouldn’t want to put words into her mouth. She was on your channel yesterday with that fine journalist, taking questions and answering them. But I think the point she was making is that there is a significant difference between the Conservatives and Reform when it comes to the economy

“Reform, like Labour, support nationalising industries. They want to remove the two-child benefit cap and spend more on welfare. At the last election, they put forward plans that amounted to around £140billion in unfunded spending commitments.

“The Conservative Party, on the other hand, is the party of fiscal responsibility. We are determined to manage the economy properly.

“We don’t just say how we will spend money, we explain how we will pay for it. The Chancellor has outlined £47 billion of savings, and he hasn’t even committed to spending all of that. Half of it would go towards paying down the national debt.

“Under this Government, we’ve seen no growth, inflation has nearly doubled, and the only thing growing is the national debt. By the next election, 21 per cent more people will be out of work. The economy will be in a terrible state.”

Ellie Costello said: “Is that appropriate or acceptable language in this political climate, especially when there are concerns about the safety of MPs?”

Mr Vickers said: “She was on this channel for several hours yesterday, taking questions from journalists and answering them.

“I think she makes a valid point on the economy. If you want a Government that supports people who work hard and do the right thing, rather than endlessly nationalising industries and increasing welfare spending, then the choice is clear.

“Labour and Reform are determined to nationalise anything that moves and spend more of taxpayers’ money on benefits. The Conservatives will handle public finances responsibly and support those who work hard and play by the rules.”

The comments have sparked outrage from members of Reform UK.

Reform UK’s policy chief Zia Yusuf last month told Britain’s News Channel: “I speak to too many Reform activists, I speak to too many Reform candidates and volunteers who were threatened and indeed sometimes sadly attacked because they have been whipped up by this sort of appalling language.”

“It was not that long ago, of course, that Charlie Kirk was assassinated, in no small part because of extremely dangerous rhetoric.

“I mean, he was also labelled with these sort of slurs. It’s deeply offensive, by the way, to the untold millions whose lives were destroyed by the Nazis.”

He added: “The Tories are floundering, and the fact that they think the way to win back voters who have fled the Tory Party to Reform is by calling them Nazis is beyond me.”
