As another spell of hot weather sweeps across the UK, Albert Bartlett is encouraging households to make the most of one everyday ingredient that could help reduce grocery bills. Potatoes can stay fresher for much longer when stored correctly, helping families cut food waste while offering a range of practical uses beyond the dinner table.
The long-standing habit of keeping potatoes in a cupboard has now been replaced by updated scientific advice, which recommends storing them in the fridge. Refrigeration can extend their shelf life by up to three times, yet research suggests that around 80 per cent of people still do not know about the change in guidance*.
Summer temperatures often lead to fresh food spoiling more quickly, with the average household wasting around 30 per cent more food than during the winter months. By keeping potatoes chilled, families could save an estimated £25 over the course of the summer.
Experts are also reminding consumers to check that their fridge is set between 3°C and 5°C. This temperature range helps keep food fresh for longer while reducing the risk of harmful bacterial growth. Many domestic fridges are believed to be set around two degrees warmer than recommended.
Molly Borys, from the UK’s number one fresh potato brand Albert Bartlett, said: “Potatoes are one of the hardest-working ingredients in the kitchen, particularly during the summer. Storing them correctly means they stay fresher for longer and provide even better value for households.”
She added: “By following the latest storage advice, shoppers can reduce unnecessary waste and make every bag of potatoes go further.”
Consumer expert Kate Hardcastle MBE said: “Saving money is often about making smarter choices with the food we already buy. Small changes to everyday habits can quickly add up over time.”
She continued: “Potatoes remain one of Britain’s most affordable staples, yet too many are thrown away before they are used. Correct storage and making full use of them can help families keep more money in their pockets throughout the summer.”
Albert Bartlett has also highlighted several unexpected ways potatoes can be used around the home. They can help soothe sunburn, reduce the appearance of dark under-eye circles, polish shoes, stop glasses and swimming goggles from fogging up, keep packed lunches cool when frozen and even help root plant cuttings.
