Catherine, the Princess of Wales chose two carefully curated looks to help deliver soft diplomacy through fashion during the Nigerian State Visit.

Firstly, the 44-year-old chose a grey, tailored coat dress by rising British-Nigerian designer, Tolu Coker, a decision which spoke volumes.

The corset detailing at the back, the strong shoulders and the elegant buttons helped project a sense of authority as she accompanied Prince William on the sunny Wednesday afternoon.

By choosing a soft grey colour, Catherine ensured the focus remained on the visiting dignitaries, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

Eagle-eyed style fans were overjoyed at Catherine’s choice in designer – an up-and-coming British-Nigerian creator who hopefully represents the new generation of British fashion.

A former beneficiary of the King’s Trust, Ms Coker recently spoke about the “full-circle moment” of experiencing King Charles III sitting on the front row at her Autumn/Winter 2026 show during London Fashion Week.

In choosing Ms Coker, Catherine helped bridge Britain and Nigeria through fashion during a highly important State Visit for the two nations.

At the time of writing, Ms Coker’s brand page on Instagram holds 68,700 followers, which will undoubtedly rise after the royal endorsement and elevate her to a global stage.

During the evening, the Princess of Wales attended the State Banquet at Windsor Castle wearing a green gown designed by Andrew Gn.

Catherine previously worked with the Singaporean designer in 2023 for her outfit at Trooping the Colour, implying the two have kept a carefully cultivated relationship over the years.

The colour green was undoubtedly intentional, as it perfectly mirrored the Nigerian flag, again showing the power of diplomatic dressing.

Royal jewellery enthusiasts would not have been surprised to see Catherine donning the Lover’s Knot Tiara, a piece she has worn more than any other during her royal life, signalling stability and consistency.

Her first look of the day championed an up-and-coming voice in British fashion, while the second outfit honoured an established designer whose work is already woven into royal history.

The Home Office has today announced the successes of the State Visit, including that UK returns of Nigerians with no legal right to remain will now be sped up through the removal of red tape.

In addition, information sharing and joint operations will now target criminal gangs that exploit the UK and Nigeria’s visa systems.

For those who question the power of royal fashion and diplomatic dressing, photographs of the Princess of Wales sitting beside President Tinubu at the State Banquet were broadcast around the world, and could only have enhanced the relationship between the UK and Nigeria.
